Prioritizing pedestrians at the Riverside roundabout in Saint-Lambert
Being the most vulnerable road user, pedestrian safety must be at the center of the road network's priorities. In the development of the Riverside roundabout in Saint-Lambert, pedestrians have been given priority in order to ensure that their visibility is increased in the eyes of drivers with an automatic pedestrian detection system.
With a vision focused on sustainable development and the well-being of its citizens, the city of Saint-Lambert is constantly listening to its population to make sure to meet their needs and expectations. Even in terms of the development of their road network, the city puts forward its values based on community, quality and harmony in all projects.
Located near residences and real estate projects, the Riverside roundabout was meant to increase pedestrian safety through the design of this project. In Quebec, this type of “intersection” is less widespread than in Europe where motorists are used to driving in these road segments. By being less accustomed, there was a risk that motorists would be more distracted by the maneuver to be taken and less inclined to check if a pedestrian was about to cross the street. The solution created in collaboration with Orange Traffic allows pedestrians to be prioritized at all times and to increase the level of vigilance of motorists using the roundabout.
At the Riverside roundabout in Saint-Lambert, there are 4 separate entrances, each with a pedestrian crossing. First, to clearly indicate to motorists the lane system near a roundabout, an LED sign was installed a few dozen meters demonstrating the lane system in the roundabout so that the driver can determine which of the two lanes he has to borrow. Second, as you approach the roundabout, there are bright pedestrian crossings that are always on to alert motorists of the possibility of one or more pedestrians. Third, a detection system is installed near pedestrian crossings that signals the presence of pedestrians to motorists by flashing the light panel to further increase the vigilance of motorists when a pedestrian is near the crosswalk. This high-performance system ensures pedestrian safety at all times of the day and for motorists to reduce their speed and increase their guard in the roundabout. There are also pedestrian crossings with this same detection system at all exits from the roundabout. This solution offers optimal security for citizens of the neighborhood.
