Located on the southwest shore of Montreal, the Melocheville tunnel is an important passage for drivers on the regional route. Allowing fluidity at all times is a priority while ensuring the safety of its users. In fact, Orange Traffic installed an automatic incident detection (AID) solution there which warns the central and emergency services in the event of abnormal situations in the tunnel, such as a stopped vehicle, an accident, a fire, the presence of a pedestrian or a wild animal.
This project was created with the company Les Ponts Jacques Cartier and Champlain Incorporée (PJCCI) which was established in 1978. As managers of major work sites, they are responsible for the Jacques-Cartier and Champlain bridges, the Estacade du Champlain bridge, the Nuns’ Island bypass bridge, federal sections of the Bonaventure Expressway, the Honoré-Mercier bridge and the Melocheville tunnel. The company ensures daily that users are safe during their passage to infrastructure by managing, maintaining and repairing it for the Greater Montreal.
Driving in a tunnel can represent more risks for a user due to darker lighting and a narrower roadway. It is difficult to see the road condition before entering the tunnel and there may be situations where objects on the roadway pose a danger to drivers. Not being able to be present on site 24/7, it is important to find a system that is remotely controllable and where we can act quickly to firstly ensure the greatest safety for motorists, but also optimal fluidity at all times of the day.
Orange Traffic and PJCCI have been able to develop an automatic incident detection (AID) solution to be able to report abnormal activity in the tunnel to the central and emergency vehicles. Whether it is a wild animal detected or a stopped car, the central will be instantly notified allowing rapid intervention to restore the situation. The automation of this incident detection solution means that the control center does not always have to check all the cameras installed in the tunnel, since the main screen shows where there is an anomaly in the tunnel.
